Beatrix Potter’s The Roly-Poly Pudding
A Handsome First Edition
Potter, Beatrix. THE ROLY-POLY PUDDING (New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1908) First American edition. With a color frontispiece and vignette title-page, and 17 color illustrations and numerous drawings. 8vo, full red cloth lettered in blind on the spine and in green and gold on upper cover, which also bears a colour paste-down of Samuel Whiskers, with pictorial endpapers. [viii], 70. A very good and attractive copy, quite well preserved with lettering on the spine mellowed.
This book is affectionately dedicated to Beatrix Potter's own tame white rat 'Sammy'. The dedication reads, "In remembrance of "Sammy" The intelligent pink-eyed Representative of a Persecuted (but Irrepressible) Race! An affectionate little Friend, and most accomplished Thief!'
This title was subsequently changed in 1926 to The Tale of Samuel Whiskers after the thievish protagonist. |
