(London: for Jacob Tonson, 1700; 1701).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS COLLECTION OF POEMS AND OF DRYDEN'S FABLES. The "Fables" are Dryden's rather free but very popular translations of portions of Chaucer, Boccaccio, the first book of the ILIAD, and parts of Ovid's METAMORPHOSES, as well as some original poems. The Preface, reprinted in this edition from the original can be considered some of Dryden’s most lively and unconstrained prose work. "I have endeavored to chose such fables, both ancient and modern, as contain in each of them some instructive moral, which I could prove by induction..."
The poems included in this volume were issued at the same time as the collected works published in 1701, thus the two dates for the two publications bound together in one volume. Item #29822

2 volumes bound in one. The First Edition of the Fables, with the First Collected Edition of the Poems on Various Occasions. With the general title-page for the third volume of the WORKS. Folio, finely bound in contemporary paneled calf, the spine with raised bands, red morocco lettering label gilt. [iv], xv, 232; [xlii], 646 [2] pp. A fine copy in rare and unusually nice original condition, the spine and hinges refurbished very skillfully, sympathetically and unobtrusively using the original spine panel material. A pleasing three page manuscript of one of Dryden's pastoral poems, written in an early hand occupies space on the initial two blank folio leaves.
