INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE PAGE, AND WITH ASSOCIATION OWNERSHIP PROVENANCE SIGNATURE TO THE FREE-FLY:  A story is much like a cameo, it consists so largely in the little that is left after much has been cut away, Yours truly G.W. Cable, Princeton, N.J. Jan y 15, 1902 . A letter is laid in, dated 1960. It tells how the book was first given to S.R. Trowbridge by the author when Mr. Trowbridge hosted the author at the Monday night club in Princeton. The letter is addressed to another Steve Trowbridge, presumably a grandson.
A collection of seven romantic tales, this was Cable's first published book. Item #13178

An early printing, this copy INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR AND WITH PLEASING ASSOCIATION PROVENANCE. Frontispiece etching by Percy Moran. 8vo, publisher's original green cloth with gilt rules to the covers and gilt lettering to the spine. Ivory colored cameo stamped on upper board. In a green cloth clamshell box with black morocco lettering label. 330 pp. near fine with just light wear to the extremities of the cloth.
