THE SHIPWRECK, A POEM, With Life by Robert Carruthers.

(London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1868).

An attractive edition of this work, beautifully illustrated. Falconer's poem gained wide appeal due to the accuracy of his description of seafaring life, for which he drew upon his early career as a sailor. He had himself been one of only three survivors of a trading ship on voyage from Alexandria to Venice. The work gained for him the patronage of the Duke of York, through whose influence he obtained the position of purser on various warships. Item #13891
