GORDON AND THE SUDAN

(London: MacMillan and Co., Limited, 1931).

FIRST EDITION AND A KEY VOLUME ON THE SUBJECT. The author of this book seeks to dispel some of the misconceptions of Gordon’s life established by previous biographers of the great general. Through painstaking research of letters written by and about Gordon, he constructs a narrative organized into three main parts: Gordon’s experiences in the Equatorial Province (1874-6), the Sudan (1877-9), and Khartoum (1884-5). He also includes a section entitled “Digression” in which he argues why author Lytton Strachey’s portrayal of Gordon in his book EMINENT VICTORIANS is “entirely untrustworthy,” as well as appendices featuring details such as Gordon’s connection with Sir Richard Burton and Gordon’s letter to the King of the Belgians. Grounded in solid research and well-illustrated; a desirable work. Item #20932
