THE LIFE AND OPINIONS OF TRISTRAM SHANDY, GENTLEMAN & A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY THROUGH FRANCE AND ITALY [with, A Political Romance, or, The History of a Good Warm Watch-Coat; A Fragment in the Manner of Rabelais and Memoirs of the Life and Family of the Late Mr. Laurence Sterne Written by Himself]

(London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1900).

A FINE AND IMPORTANT WORK AND A CORNERSTONE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND THE STREAM-OF-CONSCIOUSNESS NOVEL. Sets are scarce now, and this is a very handsome example, with the bindings well designed and executed by Morrell.
Sterne s unique work is considered the progenitor of the stream-of-consciousness novel. The word shandy , of obscure origin, means crack brained or half crazy. Tristram in Volume Four declares that he is writing a civil, nonsensical, good humoured shandean book . Sterne parodies the novel form of his contemporaries and mocks the absurdity of development in narrative. Item #22282
