THE MOON A Summary of the Existing Knowledge of Our Satellite, With a Complete Photographic Atlas

(New York: Doubleday, Page and Company, 1903).

FIRST EDITION AND A WONDERFUL PHOTOGRAPHIC ATLAS OF THE MOON. Pickering's atlas was a standard reference for many years. He was an outstanding astronomer with the Harvard College Observatory. He led solar eclipse expeditions and studied craters on the Moon and as an interesting side note, early predicted the existence of Pluto, which would not be confirmed until 1930. Pickering constructed and established several observatories or astronomical observation stations, including notably, Percival Lowell's Flagstaff Observatory. Item #27374

Extensively illustrated, both throughout the text and on plates, including the atlas of the lunar surface made with telescopic photography. 4to, original navy-blue cloth lettered on the upper cover and spine in white, the upper cover with a photographic pastedown of the moon at center within an off-white double lined panel at the borders. 103 pp. plus atlas.
