WORKS OF THE LATE RIGHT HONORABLE JOSEPH ADDISON, Esq. With a Complete Index

(Birmingham: By John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson at Shakespeare's Head, London, 1761).

THE FIRST BASKERVILLE EDITION, "A glorious performance," according to Dibdin and one of the finest productions of the Baskerville Press. COPIES IN SUCH NICE CONDITION ARE NOT COMMON. John Baskerville is generally regarded as the first "fine" English printer. He is credited with bringing the typography of the British Isles up to a par with that of the continent. The beauty of his editions is frequently attributed as much to the quality of his papers and ink, but the excellence of his type cannot be denied. Dibdin says, "He united in a singularly happy manner the elegance of Plantin with the clearness of the Elzevirs..." (Introd. to the Classics). This edition of Addison ranks among his finest productions.
It is as an essayist that Addison is best remembered today. Addison began writing essays quite casually; in April 1709, his childhood friend, Richard Steele, started The Tatler. Addison contributed 42 essays to the Tatler. His essay entitled Dialogues on Medals is illustrated in this handsome printing. Item #27934
