RIGGING OF SHIPS IN THE DAYS OF THE SPRITSAIL TOPMAST 1600-1720

(Salem, MA.: Marine Research Society, 1927).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXCELLENT AND AUTHORITATIVE TEXT ON THE SUBJECT. The author researched the subject extensively, basing his work on historical sources, unbiased by the experiences of those familiar with more modern rigging and sailing techniques. For enthusiasts of historic sailing ships, this wonderfully illustrated book is primary reading and a valuable reference. Item #29139

First Edition, Marine Research Society Publication 14. Illustrated with 24 black and white plates from various sources and hundreds of line drawings throughout the text. Tall 8vo, publisher's original blue cloth ruled and lettered on the spine in gilt, in the original printed green paper dustjacket. xiv, 278, [2] pp. A very nice copy, and one of the more difficult titles in the series to find in nice condition. The textblock is clean and fresh with the usual spotting confined to the first few leaves only, otherwise very clean, the binding lightly mellowed but tight, firm and solid, the scarce wrapper with just a bit of edge rubbing neatly reinforced.
