The life of the beautiful and unhappy queen was full of singular romance and pathos, which Miss Bicknell's vivid but impartial narrative brings before the reader, without however, ignoring the abuses and excesses of the Court which precipitated the French Revolution. The articles were presented here in Century Magazine prior to their publication (with additional material) in book form. The National Geographic article on visiting Versailles lends additional insight and background to Bicknell's biographical study. Item #29623

Three articles bound as one. A unique copy, extra illustrated of the first appearances of each article, Century Magazine Vol. 54-108; Vol 55-5 and Nat. Geo. Vol 47-1. WITH PROVENANCE. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with the addition of 26 fine plates tipped to bound-in sheets comprised of; 5 colourplates, 1 mezzo tint, 2 half tones, 3 copperplates, 12 engravings on steel, and 3 photogravures. These are in addition to the numerous fine illustrations original found in all three articles, 14 of those in the Nat. Geo. article being colour Autochromes Lumiere. 8vo, very handsomely bound t ogether in fine three-quarter navy morocco over navy cloth by Stikeman and Co., the back and corner-pieces gilt ruled, the spine with five whimsically gilt stippled raised bands creating elaborately gilt framed compartments, one of which is gilt lettered, additional gilt at the tips, blue marbled endpapers and t.e.g. WITH FINE NEW ENGLAND PROVENANCE, this copy from the noteworthy Deering collection, with two very attractive bookplates (one engraved and one gilt on morocco) of Frank Cutter Deering. The Deering Mansion in Saco, Maine is now home of the Dyer Library and Saco Museum. 841- 860; 33 - 55; 48 - 62 pp. All articles complete. A fine and very attractive collection, the articles well preserved and the added plates all in excellent state and condition, the handsome Stikeman binding also beautifully preserved.
