THE CANARY ISLANDS. Painted by Ella Du Cane Described by Florence Du Cane

(London: Adam & Charles Black, 1911).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED WORK ON THE CANARY ISLANDS. Ms. Du Cane's watercolours, rich with floral pinks and purples, were the perfect choice to capture this beautiful group of islands. Ella was an accomplished artist and her sister Florence a writer. After their father died in 1889 they decided that they would travel the world unchaperoned. They visited China, Japan, Egypt, the Canary Islands and Madeira.
A 1904 exhibition of her watercolours of Japan led to her being hired by A. & C. Black to provide illustrations for their "The Italian Lakes". Building on that work's success, Du Cane arranged with the Blacks to do this book on the Canary Islands this time with the text being provided by her sister, Florence. Item #29866

First edition. With Ms. Du Cane's wonderful paintings reproduced on fine colour plates, and with a folding map at the end of the book. Large 8vo, in the publisher's original sea-blue-green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and with decorations to the spine and upper cover in an all-over design in dark blue. vii, 172, 3 ads. pp. A quite pleasing copy of this elusive A. & C. Black illustrated title. The cloth still in pleasing condition with just very light age evidence, the blue and gilt decorations all very bright, the textblock clean, the plates all fine indeed.
