ADMIRAL OF THE OCEAN SEA: A Life of Christopher Columbus

(Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1942).

FIRST EDITION. According to Morison in the preface, "this book arose out of a desire to know exactly where Columbus sailed on his Four Voyages, and what sort of a seaman he was. No previous work on the Discoverer of America answers these questions in a manner to satisfy even an amateur seafarer." Whether or not one is in accord with the idea that Columbus "discovered" America, this book constitutes a foundation study of the most famous of Renaissance mariners.
This volume is a condensation of the two-volume edition, published in the same year. The notes have been omitted, and navigational data; a chapter on Ships and Sailing and one on the origin of syphilis have been summarized. Otherwise, as the Preface states, the two would be identical. Item #29880

First Edition, the single volume issue.
