A FINE AND PLEASING FIRST EDITION. A very beautiful printing of Howells' third book. The water-colours, there are 18 in all, are by noted Illustrators including; Childe Hassam, Ross Turner, Rhoda Holmes Nicholls, and F. Hopkinson Smith. There is also a new preface for this edition written by the author. This book presents Howells' youthful impressions of one of the world’s most unique and beautiful cities and was written at a very interesting time in the city's history. Howells held Consulship in Venice in the early 1860s when Venice was under Austrian control. In 1866, the year the work was first published, the Seven Weeks War made Venice part of Italy. Decorated with colourplates throughout from original water-colours. 8vo, publisher’s original white cloth, lettered and decorated with gilt designs on the spines and upper covers. viii ,279; 287 pp. A lovely set, internally fresh and bright, rear hinge of one volume shaken, the white cloth only slightly aged, an old, small unobtrusive stain at the bottom edge of one of the rear covers, not affecting the spine or textblock and nearly unnoticeable.
