Menpes was in South Africa during the war and created a great series of paintings depicting the most important personages of the time, Lord Roberts, Winston Churchill, Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Milner and others. Additionally, there are paintings of the scenes and views about the country and of the scenes of war.

Tall 8vo, publisher's original green cloth, the upper cover decorated in gray and lettered in gilt, the spine lettered and decorated in matching design and giltwork, top edge gilt. xiv, 254 pp. A fine copy, the green cloth is especially well preserved and fresh, internally with some very minor foxing or toning.
