SHERIDAN

(Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1931).

FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND LIMITED of this fine remembrance of the Civil War. Hergesheimer was famous for not only his novels but such creative belles-lettres as this one. He wrote of another..."here is a book of swords, now wholly discarded, and of old-fashioned dark roses----vanished objects and flowers we both regard with an especial deeply personal regret. Well, they have existed for us only in imagination;...and so we must write books, we must publish books and read them, in order to return, and only for a little while, to... the past."
General Sheridan was a West Point cadet, cavalry commander, American military observer to the Franco-Prussian War, a stand alone and famous hero of the American Civil War. Hergesheimer's fine biography is a beautifully penned history of Sheridan's life experiences and times. Item #30594
