A VISIT TO EUROPE IN 1851

(New York: G. P. Putnam & Company, 1853, 1854).

AN ESPECIALLY NICE COPY OF THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION. Yale Professor Silliman was a man of science who traveled to Europe on at least two occasions. The countries he visits and reports on include Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France, and Great Britain. Silliman was a scientist of note, he was editor of the American Journal of Science, author of textbooks and a lecturer at Yale. These qualifications make his discussions of Alpine geology, and his observations of Mount Etna and Mount Vesuvius, of considerable importance. Item #30830

2 volumes. First Edition. With a fine engraved portrait, vignette title-pages with views of Berlin and the Alps, a map of the hills of Rome, engraved views of smoking Mounts Etna and Vesuvius, and a number of other illustrations on plates. 8vo, publisher's original blue/gray cloth embossed in blind on all covers, the spines gilt lettered viii, 418; viii, 468 pp. An unusually nice set of this elusive title. The blue-gray cloth just a bit mellowed at the spine panels, otherwise extremely fresh and clean and solid. The hinges are tight and strong, the text is fresh and clean. This is a book rarely found in such nice condition.
