FIRST EDITION AND AN IMPORTANT ENGLISH SURVEY OF A GROWING RIVAL. The author, an officer of the Royal Navy, traveled the American states touring Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, New York, Albany, and Boston with the added charge of surveying the strengths and capabilities of the United States Navy. His travels also took him to Nova Scotia and Quebec, where he toured Halifax, Quebec City and Montreal. He also visited the great Falls of the Niagara River. The plates are all derived from the author's own drawings. Item #30969

With a beautiful long fold-out panoramic view Quebec as frontispiece and 11 other fine engraved plates; 2 of which are provided in a separate matching portfolio which also contains duplicates of five of the engraved plates, a total of 17 plates. Tall 8vo, in a handsome binding of mottled red calf over marbled boards, the spine with bands gilt ruled, and with a gilt ruled black morocco label gilt lettered, the portfolio is bound in matching calf over marbled boards with a black spine label gilt lettered. xii, 207 pp.+ portfolio. A handsome presentation, the text well preserved, untrimmed with deckled edges, generally a bright and clean copy, the plate leaves with some spotting but occasionally a duplicate copy is provided, the binding to both the text and plate portfolio are as pristine.
