LAKE TANA & THE BLUE NILE An Abyssinian Quest

(London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1936).

RARE FIRST EDITION OF A CORE WORK ON THE BLUE NILE AND THE LAKE. Major Cheesman was for nine years H.M. Consul in North-West Abyssinia, and he received permission to make a survey of the Lake Tana region and of the Blue Nile on its course through Abyssinia to the Sudan. The result of his several journeys was that he visited all the islands on Lake Tana, which had never before been seen by any European, and made the first journey from the Lake down the Blue Nile through entirely unexplored country to the furthest point reached for expeditions which had entered Abyssinia from the Sudan. The area even then was essentially unmapped. Cheesman resolved to chart it and was engaged in the task for over eight years. He became the first man to circumnavigate Lake Tana, and was in fact, "the first true geographer of the Blue Nile". (Moorehead, The Blue Nile). Item #31006
