HISTORY OF THE RAIGNE OF KING HENRY THE SEVENTH.

(London: Printed by W. Stansby for Matthew Lownes and William Barrett, 1622).

SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK BY LORD FRANCIS BACON concerning the important British monarch, Henry the Seventh. The work was very well received in its day and very popular.
In his history of Henry the Seventh, Bacon stresses not only the virtues traditionally ascribed, such as wisdom and prudence, but suggests as well that Henry VII was in effect the "last King of England, that was Ancestour to the King your [Charles] Father, and Your self; and was that King to whom both Unions may in a sort referee". This is a reference to to the union of the houses of Lancaster and York and thus the union of Scotland and England. This union gave us in essence the modern United Kingdom, very close to how we know it today. Also, with uncommon prescient, he wrote in his preface "it is with Times, as it is with Wayes. Some are Up-hill and Down-hill, and some are more Flat and Plaine; and the One is better for the Liver, and Other for the Writer."

The Rare First Edition, the Genuine First Issue with “Souldiers” so spelt on p.3, and all seven errata uncorrected. With a handsome engraved portrait of Henry as frontispiece, fully engraved general title, elaborately engraved head-piece and 9 line historiated initial. Folio (290 by 190 mm), in full contemporary calf, the covers ruled in blind, the back with raised bands, hinges or joints sometime strengthened and the back restored expertly and unobtrusively incorporating the original materials. [ii], 248 pp. A very pleasing and well preserved copy, the binding with some expected aging to the board edges or tips, internally quite fresh, clean and unpressed, prelims and some initial leaves with some very minor age-staining at the edges, some mellowing to page edges, but a largely untrimmed copy.
