SIR THOMAS BROWNE'S RELIGIO MEDICI Letter to a Friend &c. And Christian Morals Edited by W. A Greenhill, M.D. Oxon.

(London: Macmillian and Co., 1923).

A VERY HANDSOME EDITION OF THREE OF THE AUTHOR'S PRIMARY WORKS. It includes valuable scholarly notes, a helpful index, a description of early editions of the author's works and other useful appendices.
RELIGIO MEDICI (The Religion of a Doctor) is Browne's personal spiritual testament and can also be viewed as a very early psychological self-portrait. Published in 1643 (after an unauthorized version was distributed the previous year) it became a European best-seller which brought its author fame at home and abroad. Throughout it Browne uses scientific imagery to illustrate religious truths as part of his discussion on the relationship of science to religion, a topic which has lost none of its relevance as the centuries have passed.
LETTER TO A FRIEND is a medical treatise of case-histories and witty speculations upon the human condition. It was written in 1656 but published posthumously in 1690.
CHRISTIAN MORALS was originally written as advice for his children, and it too was published (1716) posthumously. Divided into three sections, it comprises work of a lifetime's study and understanding of the human condition. It may be considered advice on obtaining individuation and self-realization every bit as much as achieving Christian virtue. Item #31397
