LAST LION. Winston Spencer Churchill. Visions of Glory 1874-1932

(Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1983).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS SUPERB HISTORICAL WORK BY AN IMPORTANT AMERICAN HISTORIAN. Manchester had met Churchill when, as a young foreign correspondent, he found himself in the stateroom on the Queen Mary adjacent to the prime minister’s suite. A mutual friend introduced them. Churchill was intrigued by Manchester’s assignment: the Middle East and India.
Manchester worked with diaries, memoranda, government documents, the private correspondence of Churchill and others, interviewed Churchill’s surviving colleagues and members of his family. He had a profound grasp of British history. He served for many years as a professor of history and was the author of many other important works including THE DEATH OF A PRESIDENT, AMERICAN CAESAR, THE ARMS OF KRUPP and THE GLORY AND THE DREAM.
