PARADISE LOST [with] PARADISE REGAIN'D, TO WHICH IS ADDED SAMSON AGONISTES and Poems upon Several Occasions, From the Text of Thomas Newton

(Birmingham: by John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson in London, 1758).

FIRST BASKERVILLE EDITION OF MILTON'S MOST IMPORTANT WORKS. John Baskerville is generally regarded as the first "fine" English printer: he is credited with bringing the typography of the Isles up to a par with that of the continent. The beauty of his editions is frequently attributed as much to the quality of his papers and ink, but the excellence of his type cannot be denied. Dibdin says, "He united in a singularly happy manner the elegance of Plantin with the clearness of the Elzevirs..." (Introd. to the Classics). Item #31737

2 volumes. First Edition of the great Baskerville printing of Milton. 8vo, handsomely bound at a later date in full polished calf, the spines with raised bands dividing the compartments, three compartments lettered in gilt, protective cloth slipcase housing both volumes.
