PEVERIL OF THE PEAK
(Edinburgh and London: Archibald Constable and Co. and Hurst, Robinson, and Co., 1822).
AN OUTSTANDING FIRST EDITION SET OF THIS WAVERLEY NOVEL, A SET IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. PEVERIL OF THE PEAK is also Sir Walter Scott's longest novel, and thus the longest of the Waverley series. As with all the Waverley novels before 1827 publication was anonymous.
The story centers on the Popish Plot, and takes place around 1678. Actions of the story occur in the Peak District of Central England, on the Isle of Man, and in London. An historical romance; Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the "Popish Plot" of 1678.
