Unlike the 1827 CHRONICLES First Series, which was a collection of several stories, the Second Series consists of only one: 'Saint Valentine's Day; Or, The Fair Maid Of Perth.' Set just at conclusion of the 14th century, the story was inspired by the strange, but historically true, Battle of the North Inch. For source material Scott drew on he two narrative poems from the 14th and 15th centuries, The Brus by John Barbour, and The Wallace by Blind Hary. From the same period he found helpful material in Chronica Gentis Scotorum by John of Fordun, and its continuation Scotichronicon by Walter Bower. Item #34049

The printer's boards sturdy and very well preserved, a touch of cracking to the outer paper near the foot of two volumes, the boards themselves strong and firm, some expected mellowing and a little wear to the paper labels, in all a fully authentic set in superb state of preservation.
