FIRST AND ONLY PRINTING OF THIS VERY FINE FACSIMILE EDITION OF SIR ERNEST SATOW'S SEMINAL WORK ON THE BAMBOOS OF JAPAN. A rare work, this is a formidable companion to the study of the myriad numbers of bamboos used for both foodstuffs and garden decoration. The fine and numerous colouplates are reproduced from the originals in the copy held by the Asiatic Society of Japan. Satow's book is replete with botanical information and guidance on the understanding, growing and cultivation of the various forms of bamboos. Included among many other subjects are discussions relating to bamboos in general, elements of the plants including the shoots, branches, sheaths, joints or knots, and the roots and leaves. There is extensive information included on cultivation including sections on producing suitable soil for the plants, the composting and fertilization of the plants, transplanting, protection and cutting and a discussion of the many forms of bamboos with pictures relevant to each of the studies.
A very fine and cornerstone work on the subject and a superb and beautifully preserved copy of this rare book. Item #70013
